What is at stake in literature? What is this lost “fire” that
“stories” constantly seek to find? And what is the philosopher’s
stone that writers pursue, with the passion of alchemists,
in their word furnaces? And what is it that in every
act of creation tenaciously resists creation itself,
thus giving the work its strength and grace?
And why is the parable the secret model of all narrative?
As in Profanazioni e Nudità (Profanations and Nudity),
Giorgio Agamben has collected here ten short essays presenting the most urgent motivations behind his current research.
As always in his work there is a persistent investigation
on the “mystery” of literature and on its material manifestations
(how the act of reading is transformed by the transition
from book to screen). This exploration is interwoven with
a meditation on the ethical and political “mystery” of modernity:
the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem.
